This week we have been talking about using context clues to figure out unfamiliar words and confusing passages while you’re reading.
Today, your task is to answer the questions:
- Why is it important to identify and understand words you don't know?
- How does increasing your vocabulary help your understanding of the world around you?
- List 3 (or more) words from your PCR book that you used context clues to give meaning to, and explain how that helped you understand the book more completely.
- What do you think this mean – “You can never use a new word until you ‘own’ it.”
Blog entry Rubric:
Proficient – 2 paragraphs entered in class blog about their this week using context clues consciously, during their entry students must utilize at least 3 new words that they learned from reading this week
Non- Proficient – less than 2 paragraphs entered in class blog, students use less than 3 new words that they learned this week from reading
**Once your blog entry is completed, read this short selection. **

I think it's important for you to understand new words because if you don't you are not goin to want to expand on the things you don't know you would stick to what you do know and you won't get very far. If you started to learn new words you would be able to read more books and learn more about different things. I think increasong your vocabulary will help understand the world around you because if you only know a little bit of words the things you would need to understand you won't because of you not expanding your vocabulary.
In my pcr book I knew most of the words in there but these are some that other people may not know. On page 69 the author rights that Darcy which is the main character stammered over here words stammered means studderd or stumbled. I think thats what the word means because of the situation she was in and when your nervous sometimes you studder or talk in a certain way. Also on page 75 she used the words dubbed and neglected. The main character was talking about the times with her father, and one of the times was when he dubbed her sister a princess. I think dubbed means made or declared because that seemed logical and it made sense in the sentence. Another word was neglected and I think neglected means left out someone who doesnt get alot of attention. I figured that out because the dad made the sister a princess and not her. I think that qoute means you can;t use a word you don't fully understand so don't use a word you can't fully explain.
Hi!! Let's see... understanding words that you don't know is a vital skill to english. English has many words that we don't know and still many being made. THese words expand our vocabulary and make us smarter in the languages' sense.
Identifying big and powerful words can help us with other people that know these difficult words that we don't know. It can also help us by giving us a sense of supiriority over the other people who don't know all those big words you know the meaning to.
By the way, supiriority was one the words from my PCR book. Supiriority means a feeling of having a higher rank than someone else, a felling of being better than them. Another words is anguished, which means to be extreamly destrot or shocked, sad. My final word is solemnly, which means to be almost alone, lonley, just being the only person there.
Finally, the meaning behind "owning" a word is getting the meaning of it completely. Knowing the definition of the words that you use gives you more chances to use different words for situations and assigments that you might recieve frlom another person. Until you know the definition of the word you're trying to use inside and out, or "owning the word" then you can't use the word at all.
It is important to indentify understand words we didn’t know for many reasons. If we know how to define a word by looking in sentence and using the words around it are reading will get better. Identifying words we don’t know is also a great strategy because if we don’t know it we can use the context clue skill or look it up in a dictionary. Increasing my vocabulary will help inprove my reading and also my writing in many ways. A greater vocabulary will open me up to much more educated words and make my writings look to be at a higher level. There are words we see everyday that we don’t know, they could be any where for example, street signs, billboards, newspapers, or in class. If we can open are minds to higher level words then we will understand some things we may have never understood.
I found three words that I didn’t know. The word was “soppy”. Using context clues I figures out that the word soppy means scared. I also found the word “blithe” this word means happy. The third word that I used context clues to figure out was “adept” this is a word you can use when calling someone smart. I think that this means that we cant use the word until we have found out the whole meaning and can could use the word in a sentece. This also means that we cant use a word until we fully understand it and get what it means.
i think that THE REASON WHY it is important to i dentify and understand words you dont know is? so you can get a better understanding of that word, like seeing the word from your own point of veiw. i think that learning words does give us a better understanding of the world around us because it give's us a better perspective of life bye learning more and knowing more......etc
It is important to identify and understand words that we don't know because it makes things easier. Like if you think about it increasing your vocabulary is great it helps you with alot of things especially in school. Just think about stumbling across a word that you didnt know but when you go to identify the meaning you wont stumble across it again. Also identify and understanding words makes you more advanced and ahead of some people and just having a big vocabulary is good for you because you are going to do less looking up for words. And adding more words better.
Increasing my vocabulary helps me understand the world around me more because the more words I know is going to help me in the long run. Having a big vocabuary is important like say Im reading a book and come across a word in the sentence and not understandoing what the sentence is saying because of certain words. Well if I knew the meaning of those words I would be understanding it clearly. Or say if i would be having a conversation with someone and they start using some advanced words well you if you have a big vocabulary then it should be no problem understanding them.
I think its important to identify and understand words you dont know because you need to know whats happening in the book or a paragraph you read. Like I was reading my book, yellow flag and i stumbled on a word Loomed. I had to use context clues to figure it out. I saw it meant ready to do something, like you are excited to do it.
Increasing your vocabulary helps your understanding of the world around you by ever day life. Like reading a book, text messages. Like when I was reading my book I didn't know what the word skitter meant, so I used the clues and I found it means you are nevorus about something, that you thinks going to happen.
understanding word syou dont konw can strech your vocabulary.increasing your vocabulary can help you understand the word around you because when you find out the definition to a word you dont know you remember that word and add it to your vocabulary and later on in life when you see that word again you will be like hey i know what that means and you can tell others if they dont know it. Like in my book the main character said " i always took one more slug from my water bottle." so the i use context clues i and i figured out that slug meant he took another sip from his water bottle.another word is flushed."she flushed red." the aurthor said. so i could say that flushed means that she turnd red, because she was embarassed.saying you cant use a new word untill you own it means you cant use a word you dont know.
It is important to understand the words you don't know because it'll help you buid up your vocabulary. It'll also help you understand the sentence in the story. For example, I'm reading "A Perfect Snow", and a word for example I didn't understand was gumption (139). But I figured out what it was by re-reading the sentence over. It means to have courage; bravery.
Increasing your vocabulary will help you understand the world better by using more vivid words when you speak. It'll make you look more intelligent when you speak to people.
Three or more words I had trouble with was clasping (129), clatter (131), and briskly 131). And by reading around the word helped me realize that clasping means to put you hands together in prayer form, clatter means to rapidly hit something over and over. Like your teeth when you're cold. And briskly means to do something fast and rudely.
It is important to identify and understand words you don't know for multiple reasons. Recently I read a book called "And Still We Rise" and I flew across dozens of words I did not know. After the first chapter I immediately realized how important increasing your vocabulary was. I deicided to write down the words I didn't know and search for them in the dictionary. That strategy emancipated my knowledge and I began to take control of what I was reading.
Now whenever I read a book, some of the words I selected come back to me as if I missed a train. Increasing your vocabulary can help you with your equivalency and change many impressions that many teachers may have on you. These are the reasons why increasing your vocabulary is important.
1) i think its important to learn the words you dont understand because(ex)the world is filled with sentences that comes out of peoples mouth and you would have to know what you are saying because if you dont no one would understand you.
2) increasing your vocabulary could help you because if you want to say a good complement to someone you would have to know what you are talking about and you would have to know what the word mean and also how its used in the sentences.
3) A book is always filled with alot of words but it doesnt mean that you know all of them but it could be possible, the book im reading is called TEARS OF THE TIGER it has almost alot of words i dont understand. But in order to understand them i have to read the sentences carefully.
4)The words i found in my book is COMMODITIES my possible meaning of the word is valiable possestions because i got it from the sentences i read with the word,Also i have GLISTENING which my possible meaning is the snow is shiney and glistining is what also i found in the sentences.
useing large words helps you open your vocab useing words like.vindication and preliminary helps you on a hier level under stand other large words. so thare for you get a higher understanding of the world around you.especially when you lern new things!
it is important to identify and understand words that you don't know because if you don't know any dificult words then you will never be able to fully extend your vocabulary.extending your vocabulary is a good way to help understand the world around you
Its important for me to identify and understand words I dont know becoaus when I come accross the word again I would know its meaning.
Increasing my vocabulary helps my understanding in the world around me by meeting new people that are intellegent and when I use more extravagent words like them it could help me out in geting a good job.
Rambunctious- is when someone acts a certin way because of what they been throught.
Anticipation-when someone tries to look for something or cant wait for something to happen.
Today i was hopeing for some snow but all we got was some frozen rain. Now i now not to trust the wether man because they have no idea what they are ....... doing at the news place.
It's important to know and identify hard words because of your speeches and grammer. You need to understand that in the world if you want a good job; when you present yourself you need the proper grammer.
It's important to increase your vocabulary to impress people and future boss when you get a job. Mostly to have a good mark that you speek enormous language and proper grammer.
In my pcr book there were a couple words that were big to not understand but because of the help of english there is an easier way to understand big words that you may not know. I can't remember what they word. But they are cald diction words.
I think that passage means that unless you for sure understand the word completly then you can use it because if your future boss asks you what's the word means that your always using. And if you don't know what it means then.
