Towards the end of last week, we were looking more in depth into the foundations of public speaking. We discovered and studied the new concepts of the words:
- Ethos – the self, establish credibility, establish strong character, community, trust
- Pathos – evokes emotions: happiness, fear, sadness, anger, “coolness,” etc.
- Logos - based on logic and reasoning, statistics, things that “make sense”
Your Task Today: Over the weekend, your homework was to identify and be able to discuss ethos, pathos, and logos’ role in your life. For today’s blog entry, you are going to explain how these three rhetorical appeals impact you. What to Include:
- The Title/Description of Something with Ethos, Pathos, and/or Logos
- The Medium in which this was displayed (TV Commercial, Speech, Billboard, etc.)
- An Explanation of how Ethos, Pathos, and Logos were present
- An Explanation of how Ethos, Pathos, and Logos impacted this thing

the commercial that I saw over the weekend that made me remember our homework was. It was a saturday morning and I was watching t.v and the commercial i saw was the ASPCA commercial. where you can see the hurt animals. I think that, that commercial was PATHOS.
i used pathos on staurday when my dad invited my BF to go bowling with us but he couldnt bowl because he sprained his ankle so i kinda felt bad that he was goin to be bored so i kept him company
-pathos came in becuase seeing him on cructhes made me feel like i couldnt leave him by himself plus he needed help with gettin around the place..
i used ethos on sunday when i was texting Francesca about my little brother and told her that i know how my little brother feels because im he only girl and when i was little it was kind of the same with how he feels now
-ethos came in becuase i compared myself with my little brother from when i was little.
i used logos sunday during the day with my dad becuase i wanted to go to my cousins house and i could only go if i cleaned my room, helped my grandmom fix something in the kitchen and then take my puppy with me.
-logos came in becuase it was like favor if i do something i can leave.
I have chosen a car commercial. All car commercials show ethos and logos. Car commercials are out there so that you will go to their dealer and buy their car. They give sales and show how nice their cars are to try and get people to want their product. This shows ethos because they are trying to sell cars to the community. Logos shows up also because they try and persuade people by telling them that their prices are the lowest and you can lease for the smallest amount of money a month. I can also see pathos in a car commercial. They always try and say that their car is the best of its kind and the most durable and nice looking. Car commercials hold all three, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. This impacts me because when it is time to buy a car, I am going to want the best car for the best price.
A method of communication between people would be the form of speach of ethos, pathos or logos. One of the forms is ethos, the self. A way I found a form of ethos is when I was studying Hitler. He talked to people in a way that made it seem that he was on their side, like he knew what the people were dealing with and had way to fix it. Hitler made himself look like he was the guy to trust, the man that could get the job done. And he did; at least his job, until he died. He created a strong character for himself, a person to follow, and manipulated all the people around him with his words. Some people use ethos as a way to manipulate people, while others like Martian Luther King Jr. try to convince people in a brighter direction. It all depends on how the person speaking wants to use their words.
today there were cops out my house. there were swat they brook down the door nere my house they had a loud specer saying come out with your hands up. this is pathos because the swat and cops were using fear to get him or her out the house.they were there for an hour they were takeing bags of something it looked like weed.the reson i think this is pathos is there were so many cops and swat they were just trying to over welm him or her.it looked like that him or her was not there because there was no one in hand cuffs.
Pathos--Sad commercials. Logos--commercials with poor children begging for food. Now lets say thy're giving out...pieces of CANDY. They'll say buy one get two for free!!! All you gotta do is donate one bag of (whatever type of food) rice and you can save $5.00 and get a an extra prize. It's sad to see soome commercials. This is called pathos. But the facts are not always FACTS. They will try to pull you in the net like fish and turn you into tuna. Ethos--self respect and honor. For example--A mother is about to give birth to a baby...the doctors are panicing. The boss comes in and says let me handle this! I've been through this before! I have plenty of experience. Usually people with ethos are leaders, they have courage and they look straight ahead knowing its a long road toward success. I've seen ethos, logos, and pathos on tv. Actually everyday.
satrday i was talking to my aunt about how hard it was to get a job. i told her about how many aplications i sent out. she tells me that i shouldn't wait for them to call me because she had been ther befor and she knows how fustrating it is to look for a job at my age.
this is an exelent example of ethos. as my aunt was telling me about how i should go about geting a job. she was telling me about her expirienc with this situation. it was like she was trying to establish a sence of credibility and trust. that why this is ethos
All in my life i discovered many commercials about bussiness like car insurance, life insurance, and other thats out in the world which are LOGOS because they are trying to convence me to use their insurance to help me with my problems whenever i get into one.
My life is filled with many diffrent PATHOS which is emotions like, When im alone in the dark i fear because my mind plays tricks with me. My life is filled with coolness because i give respect to people and i get respect back from them but whenever i dont get respect back i get pretty angry.
I am filled with care in my life people should trust me, not because i said so is because i dont like to do anything bad i always beleiving whats right for myself which is ETHOS
I use and see Pathos in my everyday life. When I'm mad at someone I always say exactly why I'm mad and I try to make that person feel bad.Or when my feelings get hurt about something, the person tries to apologize and make me feel better about it. I see Ethos alot when people try to persuade me to trust them about certain stuff. Let's say a boy is trying to talk to a girl, he's going to try and persuade her to think he's this good guy. Thats when logos comes in the advertisements aren't always true, he's just like the insurance commercials. "save you 15 percent or more on car insurance" "I'm only talking to you,I'm not a cheater." It's all the same. You can use Ethos,Pathos and Logos in the worst of situations. A girl finds her boyfriend cheating "babe I'm sorry It's not what it looks like, trust me I would never do anything like that to you." "Your so beautiful why would I want her." "I'm not like all the rest I'm different,better you'll see just stick with me." There's Ethos,Pathos,and Logos.
over the weekend when i was watching tv. i saw a commercial.it was the geico commercial about how geico can save you 15% or more on car insurance.that was an example of logos becase it was using logic to help persuade the buyer of car insurance to help them make the decission to go with this company.
another example is a different commercial i saw about adopting dogs and cats. it was a example of pathos because when i saw the commercial it made me feel bad about the dogs in the commercial and made me want to buy one to help it out. this commercial used emotions to make people feel bad about putting teir dog in a kennel or not buying a dog.
The words ethos, pathos, and logos have a big part in my life like everything I see relates to them. Any thing I see could go to any of those three words like t.v., posters, people talking, and letters. For me this is like everyday thing i see these things on a daily basis. For instance ethos, I live in th city of pennsauken and we have our own channel and it talks about how the community helps trying to keep our city clean. Or i could even use my house for example like my mom has us work together to make sure our house stays clean so we are working together to do something. Pathos is my next topic, this one is a everyday thing for everyone for example some people have thier good days and some have thier bad days and pathos is all about emotions. Like if something happens at work that my mom desnt like then it makes her upset sometimes angry or when people do dumb stuff it makes me mad. So last but not least logos this one is everywhere espcially on t.v.'s, posters, phone calls. Like me everytime I turn on the t.v. I see logos like the commercials for detergine for clothes the person on t.v. is always saying how it cleans 99.9% better then any other detergine. Also like the cable people they're always trying to say oo if you buy the package deal it will save you more money or how thier service gives the same amount of channels as the other provider but they are selling it for less. So to some this all down these are everyday things that are in my life I deal with the emotions, the self trust, and the stuff thats based on logic.
I think in my life where ethos ,pathos, and logos are in effect is with me finishing school. Overall as a person it makes me a better one i acquire more knowledge and it helps me in the process of being an adult. This is something that you would have to do because your doing it for yourself not anyone else. Also i could take advice from my brother who graduated leanr from his mistakes so i wont commit the same as he did. School can have its days where it can make you frustrated and it can be nevre racking because you have to do a billion things at once but its like a test to see if you can do it. Then it can be those days where you love school when your really engaged in the assignment and willing to complete everything. School can have you stressed with grades but you being stressed with grades would only make you want to do better. Not everyone in my family finished school so in my mind im trying to be like the ones who finished because i know its an honor and Privilege. And sooner or later all that hard work and effort you put in it is definatly going to pay off in the long wrong. It makes common sense to finish school because every year that you get promoted it feels like a step closer to the real world. These are the reasons why i feel as though that me completing school has ethos, pathos, and logos. Because when it becomes time for me to step out into the real world i would have aquire enough knowledge to be sucessful in life.
Ethos:
When discussing a problem with someone, you might want someone older to talk to about your problem. I was dealing with a friend who used me to get to other people. I didn't know what to do so I asked my older cousin, "Should I talk to her, confront her that, what she is doing is just wrong?" my cousin replied, "She isn't your friend if she is just using you. Tell her that you don't appreciate what she is doing and that she should be grateful that you even have her as a friend. Trust me, I have been in your shoes before."
Pathos:
Sitting on my comfty couch watching tv and this commercial pops up, saying to help out helpless poor childrens that is homeless in poor countrys. Sad boys and girls with almost clothes falling off their bodies, them laying on the floor with dirty blankets. You can even see them trying to build a tent for a home to live in. Then this sad music appeared which almost made my heart starts to cry. I ran downstairs and told my mom I'm going to donate 20$ to them poor childrens out there. I'm glad I did it. I wanna see their sad faces goes up and have a smile instead of watery eyes and a frown every day knowing that they will get help and cared for.
Logos:
Violence is never the answer to solve a problem. Alot of fights happens in school. Especially in high school. Most kids would love to see a fight, even if it's a argument, they would bundle up together and see what's going on. Noise people.. Why can't people just get along, fighting only bruises you up, make you feel so much hatred it can really turn you into a monster. Fighting doesn't solve anything because what happens if someone think someone else won, and it gets around. And the person they fought gets mad again, they would want to fight again. People can't keep their mouths shut, words get around too eaasily, and rumors starts drastically. It's common sense.
Ethos,Pathos,and Logos are in everything we do, we use one of the three in our everyday lives. even if we never noticed. I see ethos when someone is running for mayor or govener they make these ads that want to persuade the community to trust them to do the right thing for them and everone else.
Pathos is in everything like movies,books when you visualize the sad,dramatic parts.You use pathos when your telling your friends about something that might have happened to you when you got hurt or when you lost someone you loved or maybe even when your going threw a bad break up.
Logos is used when a laywer is trying to solve a case and wants to win it. they use stratagies that are logic and can win over the jury. You use logos when ur solving a math problem, or trying so ace a big test like the SATs.
Thats how we all use ethos,pathos,and logos in our everyday lives.

Ethos is mostly show or hear in the family when some one younger is have conflict. Thas when a grown up comes and tryes to help by showing that he was in that position and that he made it passed it. I new that this was ehtos because it talked about trust and trying to get some one to belive in them.
is emotion its what you are feeling or what some thing is trying to make you feel. I see lots of pathos in T.V or movies. Peopke try to get you to donate to the animal charity and they will make sad comersial just to make you feel bad. IN the movies like 2012 they try to make you scared they are sayig that if we dont protect out planet their is a posobilyty that that is whats going to happen.I saw phathos in this because it made me sad it made me scared so their trying to send out a message to help or just to be scared.
is logic or statistics. int many car deeler, insurance, or food comersial. they will try to to get you to buy something by showing you how many people were happy or how much product they sell. A exaple is a car deeler comersial they will tell you"50% of our custimers are happy with their results but what they dont tell you is that they are only talking about a couple of people.I now that this is logos because it had to do with mathmatics and statistics.
1. Ethos deals with yourself and your credibility. Also, trust and strong character. Just recently, I had my own experience with ethos. It dealt with a friend and I, and we had gotten into an arguement. But over all, I told her that it was just a joke and that shes does stupid things at times too. I think she understood, but I know she's still mad.
2. Pathos releases emotions of all kinds; happiness, fear, sadness, anger, etc. In school, we were talking about pathos and where wwe come across them. And the commercial for the dogs came up in coversation. Now I haven't seen that commercial in a long time. But when I got home, hours later, I saw it. It makes you feel so bad for the dogs. It almost brought a tear to my eye.
3. Logos is based on logic and reasoning. Overall, statistics. Everyone faces logos every single day. In ads, on tv, on the radio, on the internet, etc. It tells you about the company, like Geico. "Geico can save you 15% or more on car insurance". They tell people that to have us believe them. But there's always a catch. Always.
Pathos explains the emotions like sadness, anger, fear and coolness. Ethos is a strong character. In yourself, a community. Logos is reasoning to something. That make sense.
1. Pathos-On sunday, i had a fight with my friend. I was really sad about it. I was anger to, I hope that can just pass. So we can just be happy again.
2.Logos-On saturday i was watching t.v and a t.v commerical came up. it was geico. Saying, so easy that a cave man can do it. That was saying that really anyone can go to geico.
3. Ethos- I thought I can trust my friend but i was sadly mistaken. I should have just trust myself and just left it but I didnt.
PATHOS: I was watching tv Saturday morning and this commecial came on it was about children that were homeless and didn't have anything to eat. The people who created this commercial tried to convince you to help these children by telling you what they go through and showing pictures to show that they were homeless, hungy, and in need of clothes. This is an example of Pathos because its changeing your emotion to sad, you feel sorry and have sympathy for the children. This is what they expect from you so that you can give money and help.
LOGOS: I was in the mall and I seen lots of sales. There was alot of buy one get one free, or buy one get one half off, and sales such as two for $50. When I seen this is reminded me of Logos the way they advertised trying to convince you to buy there products.
ETHOS: I was reading a story that a person from the army wrote. He talked about before and after he had joined. He mentioned how he knows how people feel maybe nervous, scared, brave, and patriotic, because he was once in the point in life before he had joined the army. This reminded me of Ethos because he showed he had a strong character , and he showed credibility.
