All for one, one vs all?

Often times in our society, people act different when they are amongst their peers. This is similar to what happens in All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury, when all of the students gang up on Margot to put her in the closet.

For this blog entry, consider the following questions:
  1. How important is the group feeling for the plot of this story?
  2. Do you think that the children would have treated Margot as they did if there had not been many against one?
  3. What has your own experience, or your reading of this piece, shown you about group behavior versus individual behavior?
  4. What are the dangers – both in the story and real life – of being a part of big groups?

Rubric:
Proficient
– all questions thoroughly answered, each answer is supported with evidence from the text or your life that is cited, each answered with 4 – 6 sentences
Non-proficient – all questions are not answered, each answers lacks support with evidence, answers are less than 4 sentences

it is important because that is how the conflict erupts. when the whole group does not like margot they start to go against her and then they push her into the closet and lock it. i do not think the children would have treated her as cruel if it was 10 or 4 because then margot would have people who could back her up. this story has showed me how much a group can follow there leader and how when it is alot against alittle the odds are very slim for the person or group with smaller numbers. there are many dangers of being in a big group. one being that say one of your friends goes and gets in a fight or robs a store or even kills someone and you were there because it was apart of your group you are just as guilty. another bad thing is usually when people are in big groups there are leaders who tell the group what to fdo. i think people should be individual and not follow a leader because then they wont think about there self.

*The group is feeling upset againts Margot cause she had some thing that none of the other people in the story had the memory of the sun.
*I think they would have bacause critisism can be made from only one person they realy dint need that many student to make Margot feel like that.
*Every day I see critisism againts other and even my self. People get gudged because of the race, color, or religion they might be in.
*The danger int the story is that their can be a fight or a big argument and in real life their can be lots of conflict between many people.

It is very important because if they all felt the same way as her then it wouldn't have made sense. No I don't think they would have treated her like that because it would be more of a different opinion and other people would be able to back it up everyone felt the same way except for one person so they over ruled her by alot. If the group split up they couldn't bully Margot because that wouldn't be the only different opinion. When your in a group you have to just go along with it so you don't feel left out. A group feeds off of itself Where as an individual person thinks on its own and can change how they feel without consulting with other people. It's not really an easy way out. You would be called a sell out or nobody will like you you would lose friends.

The group feeling is very important for the plot in the story. The way the class felt about Margot built up the storys' plot. They pushed in the dark closet and shut it. Margot the little girl didn't see the sun and if she was she'd have to wait the next seven years.

The children would not have went against Margot if they were a little group. It took the whole entire class to just push the girl into the closet. I believe that if there were less students margot would have been fine. And she would have the chance to see the bright-yellow sun.

The reading of this piece has showed me that individual behavior is being your true self. But group behavior is more like following someone else. The group would feel like they more power over someone else. But individual behavior will stand out more. For ex: Everyone in the class decided they're not doing any homework. But (you) say I'm not following those guys I'ma do my work for a better grade. Thats individual behavior.

The dangers of being in groups are doing things you really shouldnt do. Like participating in illegal activities with your friends because you think its cool. Being in groups/gangs will smash you into a dead end. And when you're trapped there's no one thats there to help or protect you. This is similar to California in the 80's. people were killed for no reason at all. You could be walking down the street and look at the wrong person, they'd take your life away in a flash. It is not safe to live your life that way and these are the reasons why hanging with big and negative groups are dangerous.

the groups feeling is important in the story because it is the rising action & climax of the story which is a big part in the story. she had something they didnt which was the memory of the sun the kids didnt like it so they locked her in the closet..
they wouldnt have treated her any different because it would stay be more against two they could just put both in the closet ..
the story showed me that being in a group is jus away to feel like you have a lot friend but deep down you still feel bad that you did something bad ..
the danger of being in a group s the same people not being there for you towrds the end ..

The group feeling of the story is very important becaues the way the class acts is how it effects the story. So if most of the class that goes against Margot of everyone else is to becausew they want to be like everyone else. So thats why I think if there wasnt so many people in the class that went against Margot then alot of the oither kids wouldnt have joined in. Maily the only reason alot of them joined in was because they wanted to be in the in crowd which is dumb but that happens alot in today society still. I even have my own expierence with this like when I was in fifth grade evceryone in the class would not like this one girl all because of these two boys in my class everyone wanted to be their best friends that they just followed them. To me it was dumb I didnt say anything at all to them or to her I was just the funny small guy. But I started to noticed how poeple would act just to be with the in crowd. Alos there are dangers when being in a group like in the story locking Margot in the closet everyone participated in that so which means everyone gets consequences. Even worse Margots parents could of came to the school to complain about her daughter being harrased. In real life it could end up even a little more dangerous because now of days no one knows whos capable of what. Like some people dont take being ganged up on easily some people might want to come back and hurt the people so thats dangers of it.

~The class is upset because Margot experienced something that everyone else didn't.
~No, I don't think that would of happened. No one really stands up for someone if there's a big crowd because what if you're their next target?
~No matter how many people there are, you should stand up for someone. It's not going to make you the "uncool" kid. It may seem like that, but it's not true. You did a good...no, GREAT deed by helping out someone other than yourself.
~The dangers in the story was that the class didn't know if she was claustrophobic or not. She could of stopped breathing. Or they could of forgotten about her till the next day. Let's hope it wasn't Friday.
