Anton Chekhov: Gossip's Impact on Soceity

One of the big ideas in the story A Slander by Anton Chekhov has to do with gossip. Gossip is something that most of us deal with in our lives all the time, but we often fail to think about its impact on the people around us or why we partake in it.

For this blog entry, consider the following questions:
  1. Why do you think the wedding guests do not believe Ahinyenev’s story about the kiss?
  2. Do you think they prefer scandal?
  3. Do you think this quickness to gossip is a common human trait? Why or why not?

When answering the questions, be sure to use examples from the story and your life to support your reasoning.

I think the people didn't believe Sergei because of the way he tried to solve the problem. When you try to force people to believe your story they will most likely think you have something to hide, or you feel guilty about something. Yes they do because that's more interesting than acual facts. If you think about it regular life isn't was makes money or sells movies or books. Thats what gossip is a about stretching the truth Yes it is people want things to be more interesting whow ants a boring story. Thats why there are gossip sights and magazines. Interviewers always stretch the truth . who will buy a magazine that says Halle Berry just got married, no they want a magazine thats says her husband is cheating on her. Basically gossip and scandal is what the world is made up of now not truth.

I think the wedding guest didn't believe Sergie about the kiss because they probably thought if you didn't do it then there was no point to explain yourself. Also because he made himself look guilty by telling everyone what happen. So at the end since he was going around all worried he made it seem like the story was real.

I think they do prefer scandal because Sergie is a married man and to hear that he was kissing another woman just made them think that he was some type of player. What made it worse was that it was for his daughter's wedding so which makes them think he is just a scandal. So by him telling everyone the story made him real suspisious and thats why they thought he was some type of scandal because he didn't want to get caught.

I think gossip is in the human trait. It seems like people just wait around to hear gossip and spread around. I think its a trait because people just love constantly doing it, they have gossdip spreading around twentyfour-seven. You can tell its a coomon trait because its even all over the t.v. like when it comes to celebrities they have gossip going around aboiut them all the time non stop. Its not just the celeberties its also on the t.v. shows to they make the episodes abpout someone telling a rumor about someone else and then gets aroud. The people who watch it love that stuff and thats why alot of gossip gets around today they like to make stuff up or tell someone something about another person and they feel accomplished when it gets around. So thats why i think gossip is a common hiuman trait

The wedding guest probably doen't believe Ahinyenev's story about the kiss because of how good the day was it going to be for the wedding bride and groom. And also because people talk about Ahinyyenev and thought that he was so mad that he came up with a ridiculous story or just a silly rumor.
I think that these characters in the story enjoy gossiping about others because to me hearing and speading gossip/rumors about someone is just the same about watching the news. To me I think that because when you and everybody else in the world watches the news you find something interesting about someone that you would like to tell someone. Like if the president was having an affair with someone. Then that's interesting news you would want to tell someone.
Yes I think the quickness of gossip is a common human trait because in the human system is something inside our bodies that just make us feel better to tell someone. Which is also a bad idea and bad for the person we're talking about.

-the wedding guests do not believe him for the simple fact that he made himself sound like he was guilty because Vankin never actually went around tellin people about the sound effect or the tease Vankin made A jus assumed so he tryed to defend himself but he was wrong & started a rumor ..
-they probably woukd have perferes scandel
-i think gossip is a human trait because of the fact that people hear things & they have close friends that might want to be updated espcially if you dont like that person.. or if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend they jus because they dont like your relationship they lie about what they didnt just to get them to break up & people sometimes really can just be jealous but i dont think everyone gossips or maybe we all do & never notice hmm ohh well : )

1) the reason that the wedding guest did not believe Ahinyenev story because he was first to tell what the rumor was about, Ahinyenev spilled the rumers himself.

2)i do not think they prefer scandal because probably (in my own words) some guese did not know the cook and some probably thought it was not much of a big deal

3)it is common human trait because people gossip all the time mostly when it comes to famous people and how this and that happend to him/her. Tenagers like to gossip all the time about relationships and events that is going one to someone elses life. Mainly teenage girls starts the rumors about relationships.Gossip is like a zombie virus like whoever knows the rumors tell someone else and the person who tell the rumors pass it on and it goes on, also like when a zombie bites someone he/she would get infected and bite annother person and it just goes on and on.

The wedding guests did not believe Ahineyevs' story about the kiss because of the way he approached himself. He was nervous, speaking fast, and reacting to a problem like that will make you look but not feel guilty. When someone is wrong they'll try an persuade people to believe something else, and while they're doing it they'll do it so with caution and nervousness.

1. all the wedding guests didnt believe him because he tryed to stopped a rumor thst never started. by doing this he gave the illusion that he had a guilty conscious when all he was trying to do was stop a rumor that wasnt true.
2. some people love to spread rumo. some people do it as there job they live for people messing up or saying something wrong. other people hate scandals such as celebrities because they can not do anything with out people following them and they have to try to set examples when in the end were all humans.
3. i do think it is a human trait because we do it with out even knowing. some people do it more then others and some try not to do it at all but no matter what we do there will always be gossip.

(((had to redo because the internet shut off.))

I don't think the guests beleived Ahinyenev because he was telling them in a way that would make them think the opposite: hat he didn't kiss her. I think that if you tell someone to believe that you didn't do something, then they're going to believe the opposite, because they either don't trust you or they think your lying. It's just how things work, no changing it.

Do most peole prefeer scandel? Do most people prefer gossip over the truth? Would most people prefer an accident over someone having a new baby? I think over 50% of people would. People like hearing other's misfortune over someone else' fortune. It makes the readers feel better for themselves knowing that someone else has it off worse than them. It just makes sense to the mind, but not if you really think about it. It's just the 1st econd thought, not the thought that you relly think about. So yes, I think people prefer slander over the truth because the slander can/could make the person seem abd, making the reader/hearer feel good about themselves.

Does slander travel because of human nature or a person's curiosity and selfknowing? It's the teller's opinion. The teller can tell if they want to spread the slander fas or not ont heir own, but sometimes the slander just comes out ina burst of knowing and wanting to tell another, even if they don't know if it's the truth or not. Is telling slander a human trait? I say yes. It comes out so quickly and unexpectedly that I think it could be human nature doing the telling. Humans do have a nature of telling others information beucase it's how we communitcate and make sure that we are safe from anything bad. Special info that we have to tell others to warn them of danger., the same thing with slander. Slander makes a person look bad, which makes them a potential danger. We tell others to warn them of potential dangers to preotect them, even if it's not true. But, we treat those dangers much differently than we use to, but that's a different subject.

1. They don't believe him because he was explaining himself when it made him look guilty.
2. I do think they prefer scandal because they think he cheated on his wife.
3. Yes, because most people live on gossip. It's what makes their day sometimes. For example, newspapers and magazines. Most of the stuff they say isn't true and people believe it.

why i think the people did not believe

OUT OF TIME

AnthonyAlago said...

The reason that i think that everybody didnt believe was because at that time there was not even a rumor spreaded amoung the guest at the weddings. So when he came to them and told them not to believe any rumors they just took it like he was lying and not trying to let people know he kissed the cook. i think they prefer scandal because he was trying to tell them the truth and they just refered to the opposite of everything he was saying. Yes this is a human trait because rumors get spread as quick as you can say hello and thats because the people who spread it are bored or basically dont have nothing to do with there life.

1. They don't believe him because he is making it sound like he is gulity.
2. no because he wouldn't cheat on his wife and they know that.
3. Yes because people feed on gossip. That is like there lives making up things. Gossip goes on everyday of our lives.
